This is a history making event for the Corrib gas project as it marks the first time a Shell location has been awarded accreditation by OPITO, the leading international organisation which sets and monitors training and assessment standards at all levels throughout the oil and gas industry.

Now, instead of travelling to a UK-accredited centre, all production supervisors and control room operators can be trained, assessed and certificated to the highest international standards to manage the operation of the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal, using the simulator in the Belmullet office.

Training and assessment scenarios have been specifically designed to ensure that candidates can demonstrate a thorough, detailed working knowledge of the operation and control of the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal.

In a particularly challenging session, Ray Mehigan was the first Corrib control room operator-designate to be officially assessed as competent to operate the Bellanaboy terminal by Lowestoft College assessors, whilst the OPITO audit was in progress.
