Now in its ninth year, there was strong interest in the 2015 scholarship scheme with over sixty students submitting applications. Applicants had to write an essay debating the theme “‘Should Europe relax its austerity measures and guarantee its citizens greater social supports?.”
The students, all of whom attended one of the four secondary schools serving the Erris region of North Mayo, will receive €2,000 for each year of their college studies.
Confirming the 16 successful scholars for this year’s programme, Tony McGarry, of the Independent Scholarships Board said, “We are always impressed by the talent and commitment of the students.”
“It is encouraging to see the depth of understanding amongst our young people on such complex yet relevant issues. It is clear that they have a bright future ahead of them and we are pleased to be able to support them in their education” said Mr McGarry.
Since it started in 2007, Shell Ireland has invested over €1m in the Third Level Scholarship Programme and provided support to 108 young people from Erris.. Many have successfully completed degrees in a diverse range of subjects including engineering, business, teaching, environmental management and medicine.
