A popular young player, Mark Staunton representing Delgany Golf Club (Wicklow) topped the professionals’ leader-board with a score of -4. “I’m delighted to have won and to be back here at Carne. The welcome we get here as professionals is fantastic” he said on accepting his prize.
John Kelly from St. Margaret’s Golf Club in Dublin led the winning team of local golfers, Gerry Maguire, Kevin Donnelly and Danny Glackin, with a score of 186 points.
Michael McComisky, PGA Secretary, noted that the PGA professionals always like coming to the western tournaments and especially Carne Golf Links. He has been visiting Carne since 1998 and reflected that “the significant sponsorship provided by Shell is greatly appreciated and a most important ingredient for a successful pro-am”.
Gerry Maguire from Erris Beo and Erris Tourism spoke of the spotlight that has shone on Erris recently. Winning The Irish Times “Best place to go wild” competition and the launch of an Erris Tourism android app was topped off by another successful pro-am at Carne. “The pro-am is our showpiece. Shell are our marvellous friends, partnering with Erris Tourism and Carne Golf Links to bring this competition to Carne, and providing an opportunity to show the world what we have to offer here” he said.
The pro-am is one of the busiest weekends in the year attracting visitors to Erris from all over Ireland and provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of what Carne has to offer to discerning golfers.
Roeland Borsboom, Corrib Project Director for Shell E&P Ireland announced that Shell has committed to sponsoring the pro-am again in 2015 and told the gathered crowd that Shell was proud of the relationship that has developed between the project and the community.
- Carne Golf Links, which was opened in 1995 was voted Number 43 in the ‘World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses outside the US 2007-2008’, by Golf Digest in November 2007.
- Erris Tourism has completed a 3rd nine holes (Kilmore Nine) at Carne Golf Links which opened for play in August 2013.
- Erris Tourism was founded in 1984 by a group of local people interested in the development of the area’s vast tourism potential. The directors of Erris Tourism receive no remuneration for their work.
