Our history in Ireland
The history of Shell in Ireland dates back almost a hundred years when the company set up its first headquarters in Ireland at Alexandra Road, Dublin.
At the same time, Shell built the country's first bulk terminal at Foynes, Co. Limerick, while our Belfast office was opened in 1922. Since 1997, our operations in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have been integrated on an island of Ireland basis.
In July 2005, Shell announced that it had signed sale and purchase agreements with Topaz Distribution and Logistics for the divestment of the majority of Shell’s oil products businesses in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The agreements related to Shell’s retail, commercial fuels, lubricants, marine, and supply and distribution businesses.
The divestment of the oil products business is consistent with Shell’s strategy of ‘more upstream, profitable downstream'. Consequently, the exploration and production business and, specifically, the development of the Corrib natural gas project, is a key part of Shell’s operations in Ireland. Shell's other businesses in Ireland – aviation fuel and chemicals - also continue to operate.
