Over 100 now employed at tunnel site

Employment on the tunnel construction compound at Aughoose has now exceeded the 100 mark and, despite adverse weather conditions in recent weeks, planned progress is on target.

The perimeter fence – over 1.6km – is now complete and much of the visual screening is in place. Also completed is the entrance road, together with the access area and gates, and the peat handling area. Work on a deep stone ‘road’ that stabilises the site is almost 50% complete.

Two peat storage areas have been completed and these are now being filled. Turving of the stored peat is also taking place, while haulage of peat from the site to Srahmore has been in operation for a number of weeks.

The main civils contractor at Aughoose is Roadbridge, while Cathal Shevlin Engineering and Tiernan Electrical are also present on the site. Suppliers include TJ Carey, Barretts Quarries, TJ Lennon and Coolturk Quarries.

Almost 50% of those employed on construction activities on the site are from Kilcommon and the rest of Erris.
