Good News for Local Groups From Corrib Gas Partners’ Local Grants Programme
08/12/2008
The Corrib Gas Partners have announced details of the successful applicants to their June 2008 round of funding under their Local Grants Programme. A total of 24 groups have been awarded grant aid ranging from €1,000 to €10,000.
The Local Grants Programme is open to all community groups, clubs and voluntary sector organisations within the Erris region, which have projects that meet the criteria of being local, inclusive and sustainable.
Forty-seven different groups applied for funding in June and the standard of applications was extremely high. This brings to 82 the total number of groups awarded funding under the Corrib Gas Partners’ Local Grants Programme in 2008. Altogether 127 applications were received during 2008.
The Local Grants Programme, which has been in operation for 3 years, is one element of the Corrib Gas Partners’ response to the Peter Cassells’ Mediation report. Mr Cassells recommended, “an investment fund for local development be established involving Shell and the local development agencies.”
He also recommended that the fund “should seek to contribute to the long-term economic, social and environmental development of Rossport, Kilcommon Parish and the Erris area generally.”
In line with this recommendation a significant proportion of the funding (approximately 30%) has been concentrated on activities in the parish of Kilcommon during 2008.
The 2008 Local Grants Programme is jointly funded by the Corrib Gas Partners’ and contractors working on the construction of the Bellanaboy Gas Terminal including PM Group, Roadbridge Ltd, Mercury Engineering Ltd, SIAC Butler Steel Ltd, Kilcawley Construction and Hertel Ireland Ltd.
The Local Grants Programme will remain in place throughout the construction phase of the project. Thereafter the primary source of local contribution from the Corrib Gas Partners will be through the Long Term Community Development Fund for Erris, which is currently being established with the aid of and Advisory Panel of representatives from local development agencies.
“The high level of interest from local Community groups throughout 2008 has surpassed our expectations. The standard of applications were exceptionally high and we are delighted to be able to support so many worthy organisations providing widespread benefits to the people of Erris” said Fiona Togher, Social Investment Advisor for the Corrib Gas Partners.
