Update on Glengad Works

21/08/2008

Shell Exploration & Production Ireland Limited (SEPIL) notes that a number of people have today engaged in water based protesting in the vicinity of the offshore works at Glengad, Co. Mayo. SEPIL recognises people's right to protest but would urge everyone to take sensible health and safety precautions in the vicinity of the vessels and the site at Glengad. The area in which these activities are taking place is not a suitable place for water sports activity due to strong currents and shifting sands. Safety, including safety of workers on the site, members of the local community and any other members of the public, is the first priority of the company at all times.

Over the last number of months SEPIL have been involved in an extensive public information campaign to make marine users of the Erris region as well as the local community aware of the works programme associated with pipe laying activity from Glengad to the Corrib Gas field. This included six marine notices issued by the Dept. of Transport and Marine, notifications to all residents in Kilcommon parish, notifications to all known marine based vessels and schools, posting of notification in Glengad area, house to house calls by our community liaison teams and pier side discussions with local fishermen by our fisheries liaison team.

SEPIL have a team of community liaison and fisheries liaison personnel who are available to meet with people who have concerns with regard to the project.
