Record numbers funded under Corrib Gas Partners' Local Grants Programme

07/03/2008

The Corrib Gas Partners have announced details of the successful applicants to their 2008 Local Grants Programme. The fund is open to all community groups, clubs and voluntary sector organisations within the Erris region, which have projects that meet the scheme’s criteria of being local, inclusive and sustainable.

A total of fifty-eight groups have been awarded grants ranging from €1,000 to €10,000. Over eighty different groups applied for funding this year and the standard of applications was extremely high.

The Local Grants Programme is part of the Corrib Gas Partners’ response to Peter Cassells’ Mediation report, which stated that "an investment fund for local development be established involving Shell and the local development agencies." Mr Cassells recommended that the fund "should seek to contribute to the long-term economic, social and environmental development of Rossport, Kilcommon Parish and the Erris area generally."

In keeping with this recommendation, a significant proportion of the funding is being concentrated on activities in the parish of Kilcommon where the onshore pipeline and Bellanaboy gas-processing terminal are located.

This year’s Local Grants Programme is being jointly funded by contractors who are working on the construction of the Bellanaboy Gas Terminal; PM Group, Roadbridge Ltd, Mercury Engineering Ltd, SIAC Butlers Steel Ltd, Kilcawley Construction, Termoizolacja Ireland Ltd and Hertel Ireland Ltd.

The Local Grants Programme will remain in place during the construction phase of the project. Thereafter the primary source of local contribution from the Corrib Gas Partners will be through the Independent Community Investment Fund for Erris, which is currently being established with the aid of representatives from local development agencies. This fund is expected to support larger sustainable community investment initiatives.

"The level of interest from local Community groups has surpassed our initial expectations. The standard of applications were exceptionally high and we are delighted to be able to support so many worthy organisations here in Erris", said Fiona Togher, Social Investment Advisor for the Corrib Gas Partners.
