EPA Oral Hearing on Corrib Gas Project Concludes

09/05/2007

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oral hearing into objections and concerns in relation to its proposed determination to grant an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Licence (IPPC) to Shell E&P Ireland Ltd (SEPIL) concluded in Belmullet today. The oral hearing was convened on April 16th to hear the submissions from a number of local individuals and groups, as well as SEPIL and An Taisce.

The Corrib Gas Partners welcome the fact that during the 12 days of the hearing, objectors and supporters of the Corrib Gas project participated fully in the process.  The Corrib Gas Partners believe that the hearing allowed for outstanding concerns relating to the Bellanaboy Gas Processing Terminal to be addressed directly to the EPA, which is the relevant competent authority.

During the hearing, expert witnesses gave evidence in the areas of air quality, drainage, water quality and noise.  In his closing statement today, Mr Esmonde Keane, Senior Counsel for SEPIL, said that the highest standards of protection and safety had been designed into all activities relating to the terminal.  He said that SEPIL had incorporated best available techniques to limit to the minimum emissions or impacts on the environment in compliance with all appropriate guidelines and legislation.

The Corrib Gas Partners now await the outcome of the EPA’s final decision into the granting of an IPPC licence, which the Chair of the oral hearing, Mr Frank Clinton indicated may take up to three months to issue.
