The Corrib Gas Partners respond to the Red C poll
27/03/2007
The Corrib Gas Partners are aware of the results of the Red C poll carried out recently on behalf of the Western People on questions pertaining to the Corrib Gas project.
The Partners are pleased that almost 90% of people surveyed want the Corrib project to go ahead and that nearly 70% of people recognise the benefits the project can deliver to Mayo.
The Corrib Gas Partners have always been committed to delivering real and tangible economic and social benefits for Erris and in Co. Mayo more widely. Since the resumption of work on the Bellanaboy terminal site in October 2006, approximately 200 jobs in the local community are now directly linked to work on the site. When peat removal resumes this will bring the jobs figure to 300. When full construction begins later this year up to 700 people will be employed on the terminal.
We have repeatedly stated that processing the gas offshore is not the optimum design concept for the Corrib field. From a technical viewpoint it is not the best solution. Offshore processing is also not as safe and has considerable disadvantages from an environmental perspective. Around the world, fields like Corrib are now being developed using onshore processing. The most recent examples include the Ormen Lange project in Norway. We firmly believe that no other reputable energy company would develop Corrib using an offshore platform.
