Shell E&P Ireland fully committed to finding a solution to the Corrib project
28/06/2006
Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL) has today called on those who oppose the Corrib gas project to look to the future and help them to find a solution to the outstanding issues around the project.
The company has acknowledged that mistakes were made in the past and regrets the situation last summer that led to the jailing of five local landowners. The company has since made a public apology for the hurt that this caused the local community and has committed to do more to listen and engage in the future.
Terry Nolan, SEPIL’s newly appointed Mayo based Deputy Managing Director said today "A year has passed since the jailing of five men. The company regrets the part it played in the jailings and has apologised for the hurt and division this controversy has caused in the local community. Much has changed. SEPIL has agreed to implement the recommendations in the Government commissioned Independent Safety Review and believes this will make a safe pipe even safer. The company has also agreed to abide by the terms of reference for mediation and is fully committed to this process".
He went on to say "As I have discovered in my first three weeks in County Mayo there is wide spread support for bringing the Corrib gas ashore in a safe and sustainable way. However we appreciate that there are outstanding concerns and those concerns can be addressed in face-to-face dialogue through the mediation process".
Corrib Gas is essential for Ireland and good for Mayo and Erris. One year on from the difficulties of last summer the company is more committed than ever to delivering the Corrib project in partnership with the local community so that its full benefits can be realised.
