Shell E&P Ireland Ltd (SEPIL) together with the Corrib gas partners, Statoil and Marathon, welcome the publication of the final report of the Independent Safety Review. It is a very thorough and detailed report. SEPIL fully co-operated with Advantica, the company appointed by the Government to carry out the review. The Corrib gas partners will study the Advantica report, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and Ministerial recommendations, and issue a full response in the coming days.
The Corrib gas project is a key infrastructure project for Ireland. The country currently imports around 85% of it gas needs and during peak supply Corrib will provide up to 60% of this demand. In addition to the importance to Ireland in terms of security of energy supply, Corrib will bring many benefits to Erris and County Mayo. During the construction phase the project will employ in excess of 700 people and there will be over 50 permanent jobs on the gas processing facility.
This project can only succeed in partnership with the local community. The Corrib gas partners believe that the findings of the safety review, along with the implementation of the recommendations and the ongoing mediation process can lead to real dialogue which can ultimately lead to a resolution of the outstanding issues.
Commenting on today’s report Andy Pyle, Managing Director of SEPIL said "This report thoroughly and comprehensively addresses the substantive issue of safety. I hope that these recommendations will help to address the genuinely held concerns of the people in the local community. There are significant findings and recommendations contained in the report that the Corrib Gas partners need to study over the coming days before issuing our full response".
