Well completions work in the Corrib Gas Field
24/02/2006
Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL) has informed maritime operators, via the Irish Offshore Operators Association (IOOA) website, that it provisionally plans to begin well completions work in the Corrib Gas Field in late April/early May 2006.
The basic scope of work is to re-enter and complete the existing suspended wells and prepare them for production at a later date. There are 5 wells in the field. These were drilled and production tested as part of the appraisal process between 1998 and 2001. These wells were subsequently temporarily plugged in anticipation of the full commercial development of the Field.
SEPIL has undertaken two activities in preparation for this year’s work. In early 2005 seabed inspection of the wells was performed in preparation for re-entry. In December 2005 the seabed was surveyed to ensure safe anchoring operations for the semi-submersible drilling rig, Sedco 711.
SEPIL anticipates that these well completion activities will be carried out in 2006 and 2007.
SEPIL is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals for this work. No activities will be carried out until all of these are in place.
This work is entirely separate from either onshore or offshore pipe laying activities.
The Corrib gas partners recognise that this project can only succeed in partnership with the local community and are fully committed to addressing the outstanding concerns relating to the onshore section of the pipeline through the publication of the final report of the Independent Safety Review and the mediation process.
