Shell joins forces to launch safe winter driving campaign

Shell E&P Ireland Limited has joined forces with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Ibec West to highlight the dangers of driving on roads in the west during the winter months. The campaign is based on the slogan “Drive Safely, Arrive Safely: Safety Tips for driving on western roads” and was launched in the Ardillaun Hotel, Salthill, Galway.

Safe Driving packs, which include a Shell generated dvd and leaflets and brochures produced by the RSA on issues such as the use of mobile phones, the correct use of lights, drugs and driving, and driver fatigue, have been distributed to all IBEC affiliated companies in the west region over the past weeks.

Driving to and from places of employment has long been recognised as a major hazard and carries the potential for accidents and fatalities. The risk, during the long dark days, combined with wet roads and, very often, icy conditions, is greatly increased over the winter months.

Over the years working on the Corrib project in North Mayo, Shell has recognised the risk that exists with large traffic volumes and has undertaken a series of campaigns to highlight the hazards.

“There are obvious risks involved every time we drive. The RSA has done great work in highlighting the many hazards that face drivers and the very often tragic consequences of road accidents,” said Michael Crothers, SEPIL MD.

“These risks increase over the winter months so this campaign with the RSA and Ibec West, to draw the attention of road users to a number of simple precautions, is timely and hopefully will lead to increased care and less accidents on our roads.”

Mr John Brennan, Director Ibec West, said many families suffered great pain and loss because of traffic accidents. The dangers were increased during the winter months and it was appropriate that employers should take the initiative to highlight the dangers to their workforce.

“Ibec is pleased to be part of this safe driving initiative alongside Shell and the Road Safety Authority. Even if one accident is avoided because of the advice given out in these safe driving packs it will have been a worthwhile exercise,” he added.
