Shell hosts local students to mark Engineers Week
Thirty-one senior cycle students and five teachers from Gaelcholáiste Chomáin, Rossport, visited the Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy Bridge and the tunnelling site at Aughoose, seeing and hearing at first hand the role engineering plays in everyday life.
Fun was very much the order of the day as the students took part in a team activity competition, based on the engineering challenge of designing a simple bridge. Presentations were also given by some of the engineers working on the project, explaining the different types of engineering and their many practical applications in day-to-day living.
Speaking following the visit, Bernie McManamon, a Civil Engineer with Shell E&P Ireland Limited and a native of Erris, said: “It was great to host this informal visit and to encourage the students to consider engineering as a possible career option in the future.
“The students were really interested in how the project is coming to fruition and the many facets of engineering which are coming together to deliver the pipeline, tunnel and the terminal. There was a great buzz, especially during the team challenge which saw the students build a small bridge with a limited supply of materials. One or two of our own engineers learnt a few lessons on design and approach from the students during this challenge!”
Colette Deane, a teacher at Gaelcholáiste Chomáin and an active participant in the challenge with her fellow teaching colleagues, said the students were enthusiastic about their visit. “This was a great opportunity to show local students just how interesting a career in engineering can be. The students really enjoyed the visit and I want to thank the engineers at Corrib for taking the time to explain their roles and for encouraging the students.”
